Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Inherently Better For SEO

Posted by

In reaction to a thread on Reddit, Google Search Supporter John Mueller states there’s no inherent SEO advantage to using WordPress compared to coding a website yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar concern many practitioners encounter in their professions.

Is WordPress much better for SEO than coding your own site?

Other variations of that concern consist of, “is WordPress better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress much better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the answer is always the exact same.

WordPress isn’t inherently much better for SEO than any other option. It’s one of many ways to develop a site that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In reaction to whether utilizing WordPress is much better for SEO than coding your own website, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, however you can focus more on the content if you do not spend all your time producing a brand-new CMS for yourself. (some people choose making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller says, the most substantial advantage WordPress provides is the ease of use compared to by hand composing code.

Nevertheless, that’s only advantageous to the site owner. It makes no distinction to Google if a site is constructed with WordPress.

This question shows up frequently and is worth reviewing due to the misinformation circulating around WordPress and SEO.

For instance, take the second-most upvoted remark in the Reddit thread directly below Mueller’s.

A specific claims, “Google knows WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress sites more efficiently than other CMSs.

That’s false, though the misconception of WordPress being better for SEO continues to persist.
